The idea is to continue to work on the chatbot, but with a larger group of people
In a blog post announcing the change, Sissie Hsiao, vice president and GM for Assistant and Bard at Google, made the official announcement.
“As we continue to make additional improvements and introduce new features, we want to get Bard into more people’s hands so they can try it out and share their feedback with us.
So today we’re removing the waitlist and opening up Bard to over 180 countries and territories — with more coming soon,” she wrote.
John Krawczyk, senior product director at Google and one of the leads on Bard, also announced at a press event ahead of the conference, that they will be rolling out Korean and Japanese versions of the chatbot, with additional languages coming soon.
“We’re going to continue to expand to the top 40 languages very soon after IO,” he said.
He added that they are rolling out other languages separately as a safety measure.
Being responsible about how they are developing the chatbot was a theme the company reiterated throughout the press event. It even refers to Bard an experiment, rather than a beta.
Finally, Google announced that it will soon be adding multimodal content to Bard, meaning that it can deliver answers in more than just text.
“Coming soon, Bard will become more visual both in its responses and your prompts.
You’ll be able to ask it things like, “What are some must-see sights in New Orleans?” — and in addition to text, you’ll get a helpful response along with rich visuals to give you a much better sense of what you’re exploring,” Hsiao wrote in the company blog post.
Rich visuals mean pictures for now, but presumably at some point, they will include maps, charts and other items.
Google announced Bard in February in a blog post.
It made its first public launch in March when it made Bard available by signing up for the now-defunct waitlist. Much like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Bard is a chatbot that will answer questions in natural language.
Google has closed the wait list for Bard, its generative AI chatbot, after announcing the chatbot’s general availability at the Google I/O conference on Thursday.
Bard appears to be a direct competitor of ChatGPT and GPT-4, the generative AI from startup OpenAI, which Microsoft uses in its Bing Chat.
Google is adding a smorgasbord of new features to its AI chatbot Bard, including support for new languages (Japanese and Korean), easier ways to export text to Google Docs and Gmail, visual search, and a dark mode.
Most significantly, the company is removing the waitlist for Bard and making the system available in English in 180 countries and territories.
It’s also promising future features like AI image generation powered by Adobe and integration with third-party web services like Instacart and OpenTable.
Collectively, the news is a shot in the arm for Bard, which was released two months ago for select users in the US and UK.
The chatbot which Google still stresses is an experiment and not a replacement to its search engine has compared poorly to rivals like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s new Bing chatbot.
Notably, Bard made a factual error in its first-ever public demo (though this problem is common to all such bots.
Now, Google is adding a lot of new features as well as upgrading Bard to use its new PaLM 2 language model. This should improve its general answers and usability.
Google says the upgraded Bard is particularly good at tackling coding queries, including debugging and explaining chunks of code in more than 20 languages, so some of today’s upgrades are focused on this use case.
These include the new dark mode, improved citations for code ,which will not only offer sources but also explain the snippets), and a new export button.
This can already be used to send code to Google’s Colab platform but will now also work with another browser based IDE, Replit (starting with Python queries).
For more general uses, Google is making Bard more visual, with the ability to analyze images, offer images in query results, and generate visuals using AI (a feature that’s arriving “in the coming months” powered by Adobe’s Firefly software).
The visual results will appear in Bard the same way they might in some Google queries.
The company gives the example of asking “what are some must-see sights in New Orleans?” with the system generating a list of relevant locations
the French Quarter, the Audubon Zoo, etc. — illustrated by the sort of pictures you’d get in a typical Google image search.
A screenshot showing Google’s chatbot Bard surfacing images in response to a query about where to visit in New Orleans.
more interesting function is the ability to prompt the system with an image.
This is powered by Google Lens, which is able to identify objects within pictures.
Google gives the example of submitting a photo of your dogs alongside the prompt “write a funny caption about these two.”
Google Lens identifies the breeds of the dogs, and Bard then writes something relevant to their characteristics. It’s a bit of a tricky feature to unpack, but it could have a lot of creative potential — depending on how well the system is integrated.
Bard will soon be able to interface with the web, just like ChatGPT
Google says it will also soon be integrating Firefly, Adobe’s AI image generator, into Bard.
This is notable because Adobe has marketed Firefly on the “ethical” nature of its training data (a criticism that has led to lawsuits launched at other AI image tools).
This will also be the first of many third-party integrations for Bard (which Google is calling “tools”) with Google promising the system will soon connect directly to apps “from Google and amazing services across the web.”
It’s a sizable addition, but it’s notable that Google is just keeping feature parity with its rivals.
Microsoft added AI image generation powered by OpenAI’s DALL-E system to Bing in March, while both OpenAI and Microsoft have been exploring how to integrate chatbots with the wider web.
OpenAI first announced this feature for ChatGPT earlier this year, with example use cases of using the bot to book a restaurant through OpenTable or order a grocery delivery through Instacart.
Google says it’s working with exactly these same services.
Although these new features collectively represent a big upgrade for Bard, a more existential question for the service remains: what is Bard even for?
Although Google stresses that the bot isn’t a replacement for Search, that doesn’t stop people from using it as such.
With Google adding more AI features across its domain, and with changes to Search in the pipeline, is Bard just a playground for the company’s AI ambitions? If so, that might not be a bad
Google’s Bard chatbot, the impressive generative AI creation, is now breaking free from its waitlist confinement.
The long-anticipated announcement came today at Google I/O, leaving tech enthusiasts in awe.
The English version of Bard will be unleashed upon the world, inviting users to engage with its AI prowess. Sissie Hsiao, the vice president and GM for Assistant and Bard at Google, expressed the company’s eagerness to gather feedback from a wider audience.
In a heartfelt blog post, she conveyed the desire to put Bard in the hands of countless individuals across 180 countries and territories. The waitlist has been abolished, and the possibilities are boundless.
Excitement filled the air as John Krawczyk, senior product director at Google and one of the brilliant minds behind Bard, shared the team’s plans for the future.
They revealed their intentions to introduce Korean and Japanese versions of the chatbot, with even more languages on the horizon.
This expansion aims to connect with diverse cultures and foster a truly global community. Safety measures are diligently being implemented, ensuring that each language integration is flawless.
To further captivate users, Google unveiled a groundbreaking update: multimodal content. Bard will no longer be confined to textual responses.
It will soon possess the ability to deliver visually enhanced answers, painting a vivid picture of the queried subject.
Imagine asking, “What are the must-see sights in New Orleans?” and being presented not only with descriptive text but also with stunning visuals that transport you to the heart of the city.
The integration of rich visuals, such as images, maps, and charts, promises to immerse users in a remarkable interactive experience.
Bard’s journey began in February, when Google introduced this exceptional chatbot to the world. With its first public launch in March, eager users flocked to the waitlist, eager to explore its capabilities.
However, like any experiment, Bard encountered its share of challenges. Competing against giants like ChatGPT and GPT-4, it struggled to stand out.
But Google’s unwavering commitment to progress and innovation has led to a host of remarkable features that breathe new life into Bard.
The chatbot’s evolution is awe-inspiring. Practical enhancements have been made, such as seamless integration with popular tools like Google Docs and Gmail.
Exporting text has never been easier, enabling users to effortlessly transfer information for further collaboration and productivity.
Bard’s prowess in tackling coding queries has been greatly amplified. Debugging and deciphering code snippets in over 20 languages is now a breeze, thanks to the diligent efforts of the Google team.
Yet, Bard’s transformation extends beyond its practicality. A visually enchanting upgrade awaits users, promising an experience that transcends words.
From analyzing images to incorporating them into query results, Bard is set to redefine how we interact with AI.
Its collaboration with Adobe’s Firefly software will soon unlock the power of AI-generated visuals, bridging the gap between imagination and reality.
Moreover, Bard’s integration with Google Lens will allow users to prompt the chatbot with images, igniting a world of creative possibilities.
By recognizing objects within pictures, Bard will craft responses tailored to the characteristics of the visual input. It’s a feature that sparks curiosity and invites users to embark on imaginative adventures.
But Google’s ambitions for Bard extend beyond its individual capabilities.
By forging partnerships with renowned web services like Instacart and OpenTable, Bard will become a gateway to a myriad of functionalities.
The vision of seamlessly connecting with these services demonstrates Google’s commitment to making our digital lives more convenient and interconnected.
While these advancements undoubtedly elevate Bard to new heights, questions linger about its purpose and role in the grand scheme of Google’s AI landscape.
